About Hanen Introduction

Our Mission

The Hanen Centre, a charitable organization founded more than 25 years ago, is committed to making a difference in the lives of young children by supporting and collaborating with the adults in their lives.

Our mission is to provide the important people in a young child's life with the knowledge and training they need to help the child develop the best possible language, social and literacy skills.

We do this by:

creating programs that teach parents and other caregivers how to promote children's language development during everyday activities
training speech-language pathologists to run Hanen Programs and to use Hanen's child-centred approach in their day-to-day work with families and teachers
training community professionals to lead programs for parents of children at risk
sharing information with professionals who support parents' and teachers' efforts to give children the best start in life
developing outstanding, user friendly learning materials
conducting leading-edge research in our field

The Hanen Centre's Activities and Services:

Training and Resources for Speech-Language Pathologists

The Hanen Centre offers outstanding workshops for speech-language pathologists worldwide.  Drawing extensively on adult learning principles, our workshops offer speech-language pathologists leading-edge training to effectively run Hanen Programs for groups of parents or teachers of young children with language delays.
All Hanen Workshops for speech-language pathologists include state-of-the-art educational materials that make the learning experience more meaningful and give speech-language pathologists the tools they need to lead Hanen Programs.

Programs and Resources for Early Childhood Educators/Teachers

The Hanen Centre's innovative Learning Language and Loving It Program shows early childhood educators how to foster the social, language and literacy development of children. The program is supported by a user-friendly guidebook, as well as two videotapes. Developed for the Learning Language and Loving It Program, these resources are also available to anyone who wants to incorporate the Hanen approach into their daily interactions with groups of young children

Programs and Resources for Parents

The Hanen Centre develops outstanding training programs for parents of children with language delays.  These research-based programs, designed for small groups of parents, take a practical approach and show parents how they can facilitate their child's language development during everyday routines and activities. The programs are supported by beautifully illustrated guidebooks and inspiring videotapes that bring Hanen strategies to life. Hanen Programs can only be offered by speech-language pathologists trained and certified by The Hanen Centre through a Hanen Workshop.

Hanen Programs are supported by user-friendly books, videos and other learning materials to guide families along the way. Although these resources are designed for parents involved in a Hanen Program, they are also available to parents who want information on how they might use the Hanen approach in their daily interactions with their children.

Training and Resources for Community Professionals

The Hanen Centre offers training in the You Make The Difference™ Parent-Child Interaction Program to community professionals working with parents and young children who are at risk.  After successfully completing the training, the family support professional becomes licensed to lead the You Make The Difference™ Program as part of her prevention services. The program, which is delivered to small groups of parents, is designed to help parents learn how to support their child’s language and literacy development and lay the foundation for their future social and academic success. It is especially suitable for those parents who face social and economic challenges.
The You Make The Difference™ Program is supported by a practical, colourful guidebook and an instructional videotape that shows real parents applying the program’s strategies during everyday routines and activities. These resources are used by parents and community professionals involved in the program, and are also available to those interested in practical strategies for enhancing parent-child interactions and promoting a young child’s social, language and early literacy development.

Presentations

From professional conferences to local community-group meetings, The Hanen Centre’s professional staff speak at a variety of venues throughout the year, to increase understanding of the challenges faced by children with language delays and how the adults in a young child’s life can truly make a difference in the child’s language, social and literacy development.
