Workshops

For more than 25 years, The Hanen Centre has been providing speech-language pathologists with innovative training in running our unique programs for parents, educators, and other important people in a child’s life.

Click on the selections below for detailed information on our workshops.

In our workshops, speech-language pathologists learn to lead Hanen Programs for groups of parents or educators and child care providers. Each workshop addresses the issues of teaching program content to groups of parents or educators with varying needs and backgrounds. The workshops are also tailored to help speech-language pathologists recognize and meet the particular needs of the population being served by the respective Hanen Program (children with language delays, children who are late talkers, children with autism, or children in preschool or child care settings).

Workshop Objectives
integrate the principles of adult education into all aspects of leading a Hanen Program
familiarize themselves with the strategies that parents/teachers learn in the respective Hanen Program
accommodate individual learning styles within the group
understand the process by which learners progress as they acquire new knowledge and skills
give feedback on videotaped parent-child or teacher-child interactions in ways that foster the learner's self-awareness and self-evaluation, thereby facilitating long-term behaviour change in the parent/teacher

Workshop Format
Hanen Workshops are intensive and experiential. Participants take part in hands-on activities to experience the process of leading a Hanen Program, which draws heavily on principles of adult learning and family-centred practice. Participants plan and present part of a simulated group session. They also simulate conducting individual video feedback sessions, which includes analyzing videotaped parent-child or teacher-child interactions and providing feedback geared to the child’s needs and the parent/teacher’s stage in the learning process.

Since our workshops are highly interactive and require each participant to practise leading various components of a Hanen Program, we limit the number of participants (14 participants with one Hanen Instructor; 24 participants with two Hanen Instructors).

Professional Accreditation
Hanen Workshops are registered for ASHA CEUs (workshops in the U.S. & Canada).

Hanen Instructors
Specially trained Hanen Instructors lead Hanen Workshops for speech-language pathologists around the world. Our skilled instructors, from Canada, the United States, The United Kingdom, Ireland, The Netherlands and Australia, have received extensive training in leading outstanding Hanen Workshops.

Hanen Certification for Speech-Language Pathologists
Our certification process for speech-language pathologists ensures the continued quality and consistency of all Hanen Programs around the world.

Upon completion of the 3-Day Hanen Certification Workshop on Takes Two To Talk – The Hanen Program® for Parents, speech-language pathologists become Hanen Certified for two years. They receive accreditation of their Certified status upon signing a Cooperative Agreement with The Hanen Centre. This agreement licenses them to run It Takes Two To Talk – The Hanen Program® for Parents according to specified guidelines and to use the Hanen name and logo when running the program. Certification is renewable every two years for a nominal fee.

With this Level One Certification, speech-language pathologists who maintain their certification are eligible to attend Advanced Hanen Workshops that enable them to run other Hanen Programs.

Level One Hanen Certification Workshop

3-Day Hanen Certification Workshop for Speech-Language Pathologists on It Takes Two to Talk –The Hanen Program® for Parents

About the Workshop
This is Hanen's initial, foundational certification workshop that you must take to proceed to other workshops. It provides intensive, small-group training to speech-language pathologists who offer services to preschool children with language delays (birth to six years).

This workshop provides speech-language pathologists with the following information and skills, which form the foundation for all Hanen Programs:
the rationale behind the child-centred approach to early language intervention using the mediator model (i.e. training parents, teachers and other caregivers to become the child’s language facilitator)
adult learning principles and their application to teaching parents and other caregivers in a Hanen Program
the specific Hanen model of teaching adults and how group sessions are planned and conducted using this model
the use of videotaping and feedback as a powerful tool to promote application and integration of knowledge and skills learned during group sessions

In this workshop, speech-language pathologists also learn to lead It Takes Two To Talk — The Hanen Program® for Parents. In this innovative early language intervention program, speech-language pathologists teach parents how to promote their children’s language development in everyday interactions. The goal of this program is to enable parents to become their child’s primary language facilitator so that language intervention becomes an ongoing process.

What Participants are Saying:

"The Hanen Certification Workshop was one of the best professional investments I have made. It was very well organized and administered and after attending, I was easily able to start a group parent training program through our clinic. The information from The Hanen Program® has really changed the way I approach therapy with children, as well as parent training. This was truly an excellent workshop."

Sandra Bond, Speech-Language Pathologist, University of Texas at El Paso, TX

Click on Level One Workshop for information on the Hanen Certification Workshop on It Takes Two to Talk, which is a prerequisite for taking this Advanced Hanen Workshop.

About the Workshop
This workshop trains Hanen Certified speech-language pathologists to lead More Than Words – The Hanen Program® for Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The More Than Words Workshop addresses the integration of empirical research on current best practices in the treatment of children with ASD and the Hanen approach, which empowers parents to facilitate their child’s language skills in everyday contexts. Workshop participants learn how to help parents understand key program principles such as the importance of positive affect as a means of promoting learning and the child’s need for predictability and structure. They also learn the More Than Words Program’s core strategies – such as when and how to follow the child’s lead, how to structure routines, ways to use visual supports within everyday interactions, and how to help parents apply these strategies flexibly and across contexts.

Prerequisites
The More Than Words Workshop is open to Hanen Certified speech-language pathologists whose certification is current. Please contact Sara Coutinho at sara.coutinho@hanen.org if you have questions about your certification status.

3 Day Advanced Workshop for Hanen Certified Speech-Language Pathologists on Learning Language and Loving It – The Hanen Program® for Early Childhood Educators/Teachers

Click on Level One Workshop for information on the Hanen Workshop on It Takes Two to Talk, which is a prerequisite for taking this Advanced Hanen Workshop.

About the Workshop
Research shows that the most important factor for child well being and development in child care or early childhood settings is the amount and quality of the interaction between the caregiver and the child. This applies to all children, but particularly to children with language delays, to those learning a second language, and to those with reluctant conversational styles.

In this workshop, Hanen Certified speech-language pathologists learn to lead Learning Language and Loving It – The Hanen Program® for Early Childhood Educators/Teachers. This program provides intensive group training to teachers in an early childhood setting – training which lays the foundation for teachers to create rich, interactive language learning environments for all of the children in their care. The workshop addresses the need for the following in early childhood settings:

Prevention of language delays
Early language intervention
Language Enrichment

Workshop participants also learn how to use the Teacher Interaction and Language Rating Scale. This scale helps speech-language pathologists identify the strengths and weaknesses of teachers in videotaped interactions with children. Speech-language pathologists use this scale to adapt the Learning Language and Loving It Program to the needs of teachers, as identified by the pre-program rating. It also provides an objective way of evaluating teachers’ integration of Hanen strategies into their everyday interactions with children both during and after the program.
